Some people believe in an afterlife. Some people believe in none. Ghosts, witches, spirits, ancient artefacts all form part of the supernatural-you may not believe it, but you sure cannot ignore it. Kolkata is said to be the cultural capital of the country, steeped in history and culture preserving its history and traditions with unmatched pride. Not only do we have a rich historical past, There are several haunted places in Kolkata; complete with ghosts from the British era to creepy shadows of horse drawn carriages.
Hastings House
The year is circa 1771. Warren Hastings is busy looking for some papers at the Governor House. Turns out it’s 2015 and he still hasn’t found them.
Hastings House on Belvedere Road, Alipore was built by Warren Hastings as a small part of the Belvedere Estate and became the Governor’s residence. Today, it’s a Women’s College of Calcutta University. The students claim that till date they have seen a man riding a horse entering the campus. They believe it to be Warren Hastings himself. Footsteps are heard in corridors where there is no one. Even his wife and children are rumored to have had unnatural deaths and even their shadows in a horse drawn chariot have been seen around campus.
Another story revolves around a boy who lost his life while playing football. His spirit is also said to haunt Hastings House. There are stories about students suffering terrible injuries while playing football. Students no longer play any sports on campus. So if you happen to find the documents please do return them to Warren Hastings. He visits our city often!
Writer’s Building Kolkata
The most powerful building in the city is said to be haunted! Housing the secretariat building of the State Government of West Bengal, this 300 year old building is said to be built first in 1690 and was then destroyed by a hurricane after 5 years. Rebuilt three times, this was the place where Captain Simpson of British East India Company was killed by the famous revolutionaries Binay, Badal & Dinesh. It is said his spirit still haunts the building and employees refuse to work here after sundown. Several large rooms are said to be completely vacant as they are rumoured to be resided by ghosts. Nearby vendors have reported sounds of someone crying late at night, along with voices and sounds of footsteps despite the building being completely deserted after 7 pm. Guess Captain Simpson still waits to avenge his death!
South Park Street Cemetery
A group of friends taking pictures is a normal sight to bear. A group of perfectly healthy people suddenly fainting and having asthma attacks is not. Along with being one of the famous tourist spots of the city, South Park Street Cemetery, the oldest burial ground in the city built in 1767 is also amongst the spookiest. The tombs here are said to be centuries old. Most of the graves here belong to British Soldiers. Visitors have complained of strange happening, cameras dysfunctioning of their own accord and health deteriorating. Witness accounts also state seeing foggy human figures floating in the air late in the evenings and early in the mornings. People living in the adjoining areas prefer to keep their windows closed at all times and people refuse to venture into the cemetery anymore.
Rabindra Sarovar Metro Station
Being one of the metro cities of the country is an advantage. But when the pride of the city is used as a means of suicide it spells trouble. Rabindra Sarovar Metro Station is one of the busiest metros of the city. The other name of this Metro station is “Paradise of Suicide”. It is said that many people have committed suicide at this station and thus is a haunted place. The late night train is said to be haunted where commuters have noticed grisly shadows. Around 70% of all people who have lost their lives in the tracks of Metro have committed suicide at Rabindra Sarovar Metro Station. People have found eerie figures vanishing around the platform within seconds of the last train arriving at 10:30. Even the train drivers have noticed shadows on the platforms late in the evenings.
The National Library
One of the spookiest places in the city is The National Library with many stories revolving around its supernatural history. The National Library is also a part of the Belvedere Estate. Many regular visitors have reported eerie stories about the building. They have heard the sounds of footsteps and believe that it is the Governor’s wife who has haunted this place.
Another story revolves around the new building where several workers are said to have lost their lives during construction. It is said their spirits still haunt the library after sundown. They are still so dedicated in their work that even now if any construction issues arise inside the complex, they are miraculously solved in some moments.
In another version of the story, it is believed that there was a student of a reputed college of the city who visited the Library in search of study material. He met with an accident and died at the gates of the library. It is believed that the spirit of this young Bengali student visits the library during odd hours to complete his research paper. Early morning visitors of the library have noticed letters and papers scattered on the desks when the library gates open at 10am in the morning signalling that the student still comes to the library to complete his research paper.
There have been so many instances of supernatural occurrences at the National Library, that it is difficult to find guards during the night shift. So if you’re a book lover and are not spooked by a ghost or two, the National Library is a must visit for you!
Royal Calcutta Turf Club
This is a story of mid 1930s of George Williams who loved his horses more than his family and his job. He owned 5 horses out of which his favourite was a white stallion named Pride who won many races for him. Her last race was the Annual Calcutta Derby where she lost the race and Williams lost a lot of fortune. She was found dead the next morning on the tracks. The ‘Queen of Tracks’ as she was known is still seen on some days galloping around the race course reminiscent of old days. The locals believe in the myth and still call her William Saheb ka sada ghora.
Putulbari or the House of Dolls
Not far from Nimtala Ghat, near the Sovabazar jetty, is an abandoned but elaborate “house of dolls” or Putulbari. The place is one of the creepiest around and gives you the jitters with just a glimpse of it.
It is a huge building with dolls of ancient, Roman designs adorning the terrace. As the stories go around, this place was originally inhabited by wealthy zamindars who would sexually exploit women here and it is said that those women still haunt this place looking for justice. People still live in this building but no one dares to venture in the upper stories of the building especially in the dark.
Kolkata is definitely a city full of mysteries. These haunted places across Kolkata are just amongst the famous ones. The National Museum, the docks at Khidderpore and even some old schools have reported supernatural activities in and around the city. Stories such as these have fed the imaginations of generations and over the years newer mysteries have been added to this ever expanding repertoire. How much truth is there in these stories is yet to be known. Till then all we can do is hope to someday solve these unperturbed mysteries.
